FUKUSHIMA KNIT FACTORY

"FUKUSHIMA KNIT" is a Japanese clothing brand based out of London.

The factory is based in Fukushima, Japan, where all of our products are made.

The Fukushima factory was established in 1800. After the end of the Second World War, the factory was producing work gloves for export to the United States. At the same time, the factory also started to produce knitted sweaters for the US market. With a period of rapid growth in the Northern Japan knitting industry, this was the factory's golden age, when it had over two hundred employees. The garments produced by the Fukushima knit factory were regarded as being of the highest quality.

In recent times, however, mass-produced cheaper imports from China have become more popular in Japan, resulting in a loss of skills in the Japanese knitting industry. In addition, the 2011 Tohoku earthquake had a devestating impact on demand.

We feel great sadness that our heritage is dying, taking with it the soul of our people. We want people to love our beautiful knitwear made in Fukushima.

We are two Japanese sisters trying to spread awareness about the Fukushima situation with our knitwear in London.
